In our fast-paced and demanding world, it is all too easy to overlook the silent struggles that children face. As adults, we often prioritize obedience and compliance, inadvertently neglecting the importance of truly listening to our children. However, when we prioritize these external factors over the well-being of our children, we risk losing sight of what truly matters – their mental health and overall happiness. As followers of Christ, it is essential that we recognize the significance of listening to children, both through their words and the unspoken messages they convey.


In today's society, the mental health of children is often overlooked or dismissed as a sacrifice for compliance and obedience. We live in a world that places great value on achievement, productivity, and conformity. Unfortunately, this mindset can seep into our interactions with children, causing us to prioritize their compliance over their emotional well-being. We may unintentionally send the message that their feelings and struggles are not as important as meeting societal expectations. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that when we prioritize obedience over the mental health of children, something has gone terribly wrong.


As Christians, we are called to love and care for others, especially the most vulnerable among us. Jesus himself emphasized the importance of valuing children and their unique perspectives. In Mark 10:14, Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these." This teaching reminds us that children are not just future leaders or contributors to society; they are individuals with their own thoughts, emotions, and struggles. They deserve to be heard, understood, and supported.


Listening to children goes beyond just hearing their words; it means truly understanding their experiences, emotions, and needs. Often, children may not have the vocabulary or ability to express their feelings explicitly. Therefore, it is vital for adults to be attuned to the unspoken messages and cues that children may be trying to convey. This requires us to create a safe and nurturing environment where children feel comfortable opening up and sharing their thoughts and emotions.


Integrating our Christian faith into our approach to listening can make a significant difference in nurturing children's mental health. The teachings of Christ emphasize love, compassion, and empathy. By embodying these values, we can create a space where children feel valued, understood, and supported. When we listen to children with a Christ-like heart, we communicate that their feelings and struggles matter. We show them that they are not alone and that they have someone who will walk alongside them through their journey.


In order to truly listen to children, we must be present and attentive. This means setting aside our own agendas, distractions, and preconceived notions. It requires us to be patient, non-judgmental, and open-minded. By doing so, we create an environment where children feel safe to express themselves and seek guidance and support.
